This weekend

Saturday's night hike requires a reservation and a flashlight.

Ice Age Fossils State Park is hosting a Homecoming-themed night hike Saturday, September 19, from 7:30–9:30 p.m. at 8660 N. Decatur Boulevard in North Las Vegas. This is a valley outing rather than a Southern Highlands HOA event, but it is directly organized by Nevada State Parks and offers a verified weekend option.

The self-guided route is 1.5 miles over uneven terrain. Registration is required and limited to 100 people; unregistered visitors will be turned away. Arrive between 7:30 and 8 p.m., bring at least one flashlight for every two people, carry water, and wear trail-appropriate shoes. Pets are not allowed for this program, and minors under 17 must stay with an adult.

The park lists a $3 entry fee per person, with children 12 and under free, and no added program fee. The event is weather-dependent, so recheck the organizer page before making the drive.

Sunday option

A lower-commitment science program runs Sunday afternoon.

The same park hosts Pop-Up Science: The Bug Life on Sunday, September 20, from 1–3 p.m. The all-ages tabletop program covers insect life cycles and includes visual aids and hands-on elements. No registration is required; visitors may drop in during the two-hour window.

The standard $3 entry fee applies, children 12 and under are free, and there is no additional program charge. The park will decide that morning whether the session is indoors or outdoors. Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and pets are not allowed at this program.

Southern Highlands calendar

The HOA calendar is quiet this weekend; movie night returns September 25.

The Southern Highlands HOA calendar did not list a neighborhood event for September 17–23 when checked. Its next dated event is Movies in the Park on Friday, September 25, at Goett Family Park, 10950 Southern Highlands Parkway.

The HOA's dedicated movie page lists picnicking and food trucks at 6 p.m. and How to Train Your Dragon (2025) at 6:30 p.m. It advises walking or biking when practical because parking is limited and identifies overflow parking at the Boys & Girls Club. Recheck the organizer's page next week for any weather or operating change.

Local business check

Mama Tess remains marked open on its official site.

Mama Tess Artisan Kitchen's official page still displays “Now Open” and lists its Southern Highlands location at 11350 Southern Highlands Parkway, Suite 125. The restaurant publishes 702-330-9116 as its direct phone number and shows day-specific hours on its visit page.

Because the displayed closing time changes with the day, use the restaurant's page or call before visiting rather than relying on a copied weekly schedule. This is a current operating-status check, not a claim of a new promotion or event.

Parks and September

Summer park hours continue, while splash season winds down.

The HOA publishes summer daylight-saving park hours of 6 a.m.–9 p.m. Southern Highlands' Somerset Hills Park page identifies May through September as the water-spray area's operating season, making this the final published month of the season.

A seasonal window is not a same-day operating guarantee. Check posted conditions when you arrive, especially before promising children water play. The park also lists a playground, walking path, tennis courts, gazebos, and barbecues, so the trip can still work if the spray feature is unavailable.

Neighborhood insight

Parking rules can change from one Southern Highlands village to another.

The HOA says community parking restrictions vary by zone, and a neighborhood-specific sub-association may impose additional rules. It divides Southern Highlands into four parking zones—A through D—with owner and guest street-parking rules tied to the assigned zone.

Practical takeaway: do not assume the rule at a friend's street is the rule at your address. Before an overnight guest, party, or yard-sale weekend, identify the property's zone and ask the applicable sub-association about any stricter standard.

Ownership question

Did my HOA assessment payment actually post?

The HOA says monthly statements generally reflect payment activity through the 20th day of the preceding month, so a recent payment may not appear on the next printed statement. Owners can review the monthly statement, use the HOA's online account portal, or meet with customer service to confirm the current balance.

The same FAQ says late fees post on the 30th of each month, except February. For bank bill-pay users, the association emphasizes that a payment is posted when received—not when a bank deducts or mails it—and recommends allowing mailing time. This is a practical reminder, not a determination of any specific account balance.

Weekend recommendation

Choose the Sunday drop-in if you want the easiest plan.

Our editorial pick for September 19–20 is Sunday's Bug Life program because it requires no reservation and allows arrival anytime from 1–3 p.m. Check the event page before leaving, then pair the visit with the park's short Megafauna Trail if conditions and your group allow.

If you want to stay in the neighborhood, use Somerset Hills Park as the simpler backup and check Mama Tess directly for current hours before adding a meal. The first option is a planned cross-valley outing; the second is intentionally low-commitment and local.

Market desk

No verified Southern Highlands sales snapshot this issue.

We did not find a date-stamped public dataset that disclosed both a precise Southern Highlands geography and the number of closed transactions in its sample. This issue therefore makes no claim about median price, days on market, sales volume, or market direction.

A valley-wide number or an active-listing search would answer a different question and will not be presented as a neighborhood sales result.
